The common norm in Hyderabad is a refundable security deposit of 2 to 3 months’ rent for family rentals, and sometimes higher for premium furnished flats. This is lower than Bangalore, where 5-10 months is common. Deposits must be returned at move-out after deducting agreed damages and dues.
Put the deposit amount, deduction conditions and refund timeline explicitly in the rental agreement, and collect payment receipts. If an owner asks for more than 6 months’ rent as deposit in a normal locality, treat it as a red flag and negotiate.
